How buying a gun online works in Virginia
- Pick your firearm and your dealer. Add the gun to your cart and choose a licensed Virginia dealer at checkout. Ask your Virginia dealer about their transfer fee and whether they can currently transfer the specific firearm and magazines you’re ordering.
- We send it to your FFL. Your dealer’s license goes on file with us, then the firearm ships directly to their counter, never to your home.
- State Police check and pickup. Show ID and complete ATF Form 4473 and the state form. Your dealer requests the check from the Virginia State Police through the Virginia Firearms Transaction Program. Once approved, the firearm is yours.
What to know about firearm transfers in Virginia
Federal dealer age limits apply: at least 21 for a handgun and at least 18 for a rifle or shotgun. Virginia is a full “point of contact” state: the Virginia State Police run every dealer background check, and Virginia requires a background check for nearly all firearm sales, including most private sales.
One handgun every 30 days. Va. Code 18.2-308.2:2 limits buyers to one handgun in any 30-day period unless an exemption applies or the buyer has a Multiple Handgun Purchase Certificate from the State Police.
2026 assault firearm and magazine law. HB 217 and SB 749 ban the future sale, purchase and transfer of firearms defined as “assault firearms” and of magazines holding more than 15 rounds, starting July 1, 2026. As of October 2026 a statewide court injunction blocks enforcement while the cases wait on the U.S. Supreme Court, and that can change quickly. We follow the stricter rule: we treat covered rifles, pistols and magazines over 15 rounds as restricted for Virginia orders. This law is being challenged in court and may change; we follow the stricter rule until it’s settled. Ask us before ordering.
This page is a general overview, not legal advice. Federal, state and local laws change, and it’s up to each buyer to follow them. When in doubt, ask your Virginia FFL. Last reviewed: October 2026.
