How buying a gun online works in North Carolina

  1. Pick your firearm and your dealer. Add the gun to your cart and choose a licensed North Carolina dealer at checkout. Many North Carolina gun shops and outfitters do transfers; ask about their fee first.
  2. We ship to your FFL. Once your dealer’s license is on file, we ship the firearm directly to them. Firearms are never shipped to a home address.
  3. NICS check and pickup. Show ID and complete ATF Form 4473; your dealer runs the FBI NICS check. A valid North Carolina concealed handgun permit may be accepted in place of the NICS check for a handgun, at the dealer’s discretion under federal rules.

What to know about firearm transfers in North Carolina

No more pistol purchase permit. North Carolina repealed its sheriff-issued pistol purchase permit (G.S. 14-402 through 14-405) through Session Law 2023-8, effective March 29, 2023. Handgun buyers at a dealer now go through the federal NICS check instead.

Federal dealer age limits apply: at least 21 for a handgun and at least 18 for a rifle or shotgun. North Carolina is not a “point of contact” state, so dealers run background checks directly through the FBI’s NICS system.

Military buyers. Active-duty service members are residents of the state of their permanent duty station under federal law, so troops stationed at North Carolina installations such as Fort Bragg or Camp Lejeune can buy from a North Carolina dealer with their orders and ID.

Buyers are responsible for knowing and following federal, state and local law. Laws change, so confirm anything specific with your North Carolina dealer. This page is general information, not legal advice. Last reviewed: October 2026.

Before you order in North Carolina

The North Carolina concealed handgun permit is still issued by your county sheriff and remains useful for carrying in states that honor it, even though it isn’t required to buy. Buyers in Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Fayetteville, Asheville and Wilmington have a wide choice of dealers. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission sets deer seasons by region, and the eastern season opens earlier than in the mountains, so check your zone before you order. Duck hunters on the Outer Banks and Currituck Sound, and bear hunters in the coastal counties, often want different gear, and we carry shotguns and rifles for both.
