North Carolina: state law still references NFA registration
North Carolina’s possession and hunting rules (N.C.G.S. 14-288.8, 113-291.1) reference compliance with the NFA. Federally, a suppressor now transfers on a Form 4473 with a NICS check, with no Form 4 approval and no tax stamp (ATF policy since October 9, 2026). But because North Carolina law points back to the NFA, we recommend North Carolina buyers file the voluntary $0 Form 4 through JCM so the suppressor is registered. Ask us or your FFL before choosing the 4473-only option. Shop suppressors →
From the mountains to the coastal plain, North Carolina hunters can legally run suppressors. JCM Armory ships silencers to North Carolina FFLs so you can pick yours up locally.
Are silencers legal in North Carolina?
Yes, with a federal-law condition. North Carolina treats "any muffler or silencer for any firearm" as a weapon of mass death and destruction (G.S. 14-288.8(c)(3)), but exempts people who "lawfully possess or own" one "in compliance with 26 U.S.C. Chapter 53, §§ 5801-5871" (the NFA), G.S. 14-288.8(b)(5).
Can you hunt with a silencer in North Carolina?
Yes. G.S. 113-291.1(c)(2) carves out "a suppressor … that is lawfully possessed by a person in compliance with 26 U.S.C. Chapter 53" from the ban on carrying such weapons while taking wildlife.
What North Carolina buyers should know
Both North Carolina's possession and hunting rules reference compliance with the NFA, so we recommend the voluntary $0 Form 4 through JCM for North Carolina buyers.
How buying a silencer from JCM Armory works
Since October 9, 2026, ATF does not enforce Form 4 approval or registration for suppressors. At JCM you pick one of two options (full details in our How to Buy a Silencer Online guide):
- Option 1: Walk out on a Form 4473 + NICS. Fill out the 4473 at your North Carolina FFL, pass the background check and take it home. This relies on ATF’s current enforcement policy, which could change.
- Option 2: File a voluntary $0 Form 4 through JCM. We file the ATF Form 4 with the $0 tax option so your suppressor is registered in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record. You wait for ATF processing, but you have federal paperwork on file.
Our recommendation for North Carolina: Option 2, the voluntary $0 Form 4, because North Carolina law ties silencer ownership to federal registration or compliance.
