Ohio: state law still references NFA registration
Ohio law (R.C. 2923.17, 1533.04) names NFA registration for both owning and hunting. Federally, a suppressor now transfers on a Form 4473 with a NICS check, with no Form 4 approval and no tax stamp (ATF policy since October 9, 2026). But because Ohio law points back to the NFA, we recommend Ohio buyers file the voluntary $0 Form 4 through JCM so the suppressor is registered. Ask us or your FFL before choosing the 4473-only option. Shop suppressors →
Ohio shooters can own suppressors and hunt with them. JCM Armory ships to Ohio FFLs from Cleveland to Cincinnati.
Are silencers legal in Ohio?
Yes, if registered. Ohio treats a suppressor as "dangerous ordnance," and R.C. 2923.17(A) bans having it, but R.C. 2923.17(C)(5) exempts "owners of dangerous ordnance registered in the national firearms registration and transfer record."
Can you hunt with a silencer in Ohio?
Yes, if registered. R.C. 1533.04 lets a licensed hunter use a suppressor on a gun authorized for hunting under R.C. 1533.16, provided the hunter may possess it under state and federal law "and has registered the suppressor in accordance with the National Firearms Act."
What Ohio buyers should know
Ohio law specifically names NFA registration for both owning and hunting, so Ohio buyers should file the voluntary $0 Form 4 through JCM. The walk-out option alone may not meet Ohio's registration wording.
How buying a silencer from JCM Armory works
Since October 9, 2026, ATF does not enforce Form 4 approval or registration for suppressors. At JCM you pick one of two options (full details in our How to Buy a Silencer Online guide):
- Option 1: Walk out on a Form 4473 + NICS. Fill out the 4473 at your Ohio FFL, pass the background check and take it home. This relies on ATF’s current enforcement policy, which could change.
- Option 2: File a voluntary $0 Form 4 through JCM. We file the ATF Form 4 with the $0 tax option so your suppressor is registered in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record. You wait for ATF processing, but you have federal paperwork on file.
Our recommendation for Ohio: Option 2, the voluntary $0 Form 4, because Ohio law ties silencer ownership to federal registration or compliance.
