Florida: 4473 transfer, no Form 4, no tax stamp, no wait
Florida treats a silencer as a firearm (Fla. Stat. §790.001) and does not require a separate state permit or NFA registration. That means in Florida you can buy a suppressor from JCM Armory, fill out a Form 4473 at your FFL, pass the NICS check and take it home under ATF’s current policy (since October 9, 2026). A voluntary $0 Form 4 is still available if you want federal paperwork on file. Shop suppressors →
From Panhandle deer woods to Central Florida ranges, Florida shooters are buying suppressors for hearing protection and hunting. JCM Armory ships silencers to licensed Florida dealers so you can pick yours up close to home.
Are silencers legal in Florida?
Yes. Florida law counts a firearm muffler or silencer as a "firearm" (Fla. Stat. §790.001(9)), so it's covered by the same rules as other firearms. Chapter 790 does not separately ban civilian ownership of silencers.
Can you hunt with a silencer in Florida?
Florida's FWC rule on general methods of taking game (Fla. Admin. Code 68A-12.002) does not list suppressors among its prohibited methods. Species, season, area and firearm rules still apply, so check FWC's regulations for your hunt.
What Florida buyers should know
Because Florida treats a silencer as a firearm, everything that applies to buying a gun in Florida applies here too, including the background check at your FFL. Florida doesn't add a separate state suppressor permit.
How buying a silencer from JCM Armory works
Since October 9, 2026, ATF does not enforce Form 4 approval or registration for suppressors. At JCM you pick one of two options (full details in our How to Buy a Silencer Online guide):
- Option 1: Walk out on a Form 4473 + NICS. Fill out the 4473 at your Florida FFL, pass the background check and take it home. This relies on ATF’s current enforcement policy, which could change.
- Option 2: File a voluntary $0 Form 4 through JCM. We file the ATF Form 4 with the $0 tax option so your suppressor is registered in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record. You wait for ATF processing, but you have federal paperwork on file.
