How buying a gun online works in Florida

  1. Pick your firearm and your dealer. Add the gun to your cart and choose a licensed Florida dealer at checkout. Confirm the dealer’s transfer fee and ask how they handle Florida’s waiting period, so you know when you can pick up.
  2. We ship to your FFL. Once your dealer’s license is on file, we ship the firearm directly to them. Firearms are never shipped to a home address.
  3. Background check and pickup. You’ll show photo ID, complete ATF Form 4473 and the dealer’s Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) form, and the dealer runs the check through FDLE. Pickup happens after any required waiting period.

What to know about firearm transfers in Florida

Age 21 for all firearms. Florida law (s. 790.065(13), Florida Statutes) bars dealers from selling any firearm, including rifles and shotguns, to anyone under 21. Narrow exceptions exist for certain law enforcement, correctional officers and servicemembers buying a rifle or shotgun.

State background check. Florida is a “point of contact” state. Dealers request the check from FDLE rather than directly from the FBI, and FDLE may charge a small processing fee (capped at $8 by statute).

Waiting period. Under s. 790.0655, Florida Statutes, there is a 3-day waiting period, excluding weekends and legal holidays, between purchase and delivery of a firearm, or until the records check is complete, whichever is later. It does not apply to holders of a Florida concealed weapons license, to a trade-in of another firearm, or to a rifle or shotgun bought by someone who has completed the required hunter safety course and holds the certification card.

Buyers are responsible for knowing and following federal, state and local law. Laws change, so confirm anything specific with your Florida dealer. This page is general information, not legal advice. Last reviewed: October 2026.
