How buying a gun online works in Vermont

  1. Pick your firearm and your dealer. Add the gun to your cart and choose a licensed Vermont dealer at checkout. Plan for Vermont’s 72-hour wait when you schedule pickup.
  2. Direct to the FFL. With your dealer’s license on file, the firearm ships to them. We do not deliver firearms to homes.
  3. Check, wait and pickup. Show ID, complete ATF Form 4473, and the dealer runs the FBI NICS check. Vermont requires a 72-hour wait before transfer.

Before you order in Vermont

Vermont’s 72-hour wait applies to sales by dealers and to private sales, which must also go through a dealer background check. Plan pickup around the wait, especially before deer rifle season in November. Buyers under 21 should check the exceptions first, for example completing a hunter safety course, before ordering a long gun. Hunters in the Green Mountains and the Northeast Kingdom often pair a deer rifle with a low-power scope from our optics department.

Champlain Valley duck hunters, turkey hunters in the southern hills and target shooters at local clubs all buy through a Vermont dealer. Ask the dealer to confirm when their 72-hour period starts. Magazines over the state limits can’t be sold in Vermont, so check the capacity of any magazine included with your firearm before checkout. Barre, Bennington and Middlebury buyers each have dealers within a reasonable drive. Optics, holsters and cleaning gear ship straight to you.

Vermont bans the sale, purchase and import of magazines holding more than 10 rounds for a long gun or more than 15 rounds for a handgun (13 V.S.A. § 4021), so check the capacity of any magazine that comes with your firearm. Vermont Fish and Wildlife’s 16-day regular deer season runs November 14 to 29 in 2026, so order a deer rifle by late October if you want it sighted in before opening day.
