How buying a gun online works in Oregon
- Pick your firearm and your dealer. Add the gun to your cart and choose a licensed Oregon dealer at checkout. Ask your dealer how long the state background check is currently taking.
- Your FFL receives it. Once we’ve verified your dealer’s license, we ship the gun to their store. We never send firearms to a customer’s home.
- State check and pickup. Show ID, complete ATF Form 4473, and the dealer runs the Oregon State Police check. Oregon requires a completed background check before transfer.
What to know about firearm transfers in Oregon
State background check. Oregon is a full point-of-contact state; Oregon State Police run dealer checks. Oregon also requires background checks for most private transfers.
Measure 114. Voters approved Measure 114 in 2022. It would require a permit to purchase any firearm and ban magazines over 10 rounds. It is not in effect today: the Oregon Supreme Court hasn’t ruled on the challenge, and House Bill 4145 (signed April 7, 2026) delays both parts to January 1, 2028. Because a ruling could change that, we follow the stricter rule and recommend Oregon buyers stick to magazines of 10 rounds or fewer. This law is being challenged in court and may change; we follow the stricter rule until it’s settled. Ask us before ordering.

Before you order in Oregon
Oregon background checks are handled by the Oregon State Police Firearms Instant Check System (FICS). During busy periods checks can take longer than usual, and a delayed check can hold up your pickup. Before checkout, ask your dealer how long checks are currently taking and whether they have changed their procedures because of Measure 114. If the Oregon Supreme Court rules, or the 2028 dates change, we’ll update this page. Elk and blacktail hunters should leave plenty of time before the season.
Oregon has a lot of hunting ground, from the high desert east of the Cascades to the Coast Range, and many buyers want a different rifle for each. Bolt-action and lever-action rifles, pump shotguns and most handguns ship to Oregon dealers today. Ask your dealer about current check times before planning a trip into the Wallowas, Steens or Klamath Basin.
