How buying a gun online works in New Hampshire
- Pick your firearm and your dealer. Add the gun to your cart and choose a licensed New Hampshire dealer at checkout. New Hampshire has many small dealers; confirm their transfer fee first.
- Off to your dealer. We keep your FFL’s license on file and ship the firearm to their address. Home delivery of firearms isn’t an option.
- Paperwork and pickup. At the counter you’ll show ID and fill out ATF Form 4473, and your New Hampshire dealer runs the background check. When it comes back approved, the gun is yours.
What to know about firearm transfers in New Hampshire
The federal minimums apply at the dealer: 21 and up for handguns, 18 and up for rifles and shotguns.
Handgun checks run through the State Police. New Hampshire is a partial point-of-contact state. For handguns, dealers contact the New Hampshire State Police Gun Line. For rifles and shotguns, they use the FBI’s NICS.

Gun laws differ by state and city and can change. You are responsible for following all federal, state and local laws, and your New Hampshire dealer can help with specifics. This overview isn’t legal advice. Last reviewed: October 2026.

Deer hunting in the North Woods
New Hampshire deer hunting often means thick forest and short shots, especially up north. A handy rifle with iron sights or a low-power scope, or a slug gun where required, suits that country well. Wear blaze orange and know the town and wildlife management unit rules where you hunt.

Grouse and woodcock guns
New Hampshire’s thick cover rewards a light, quick-handling shotgun. A 20-gauge or 28-gauge with open chokes is a favorite for ruffed grouse and woodcock. You’ll carry it far more than you’ll shoot it, so weight and balance matter.
