How buying a gun online works in Delaware
- Pick your firearm and your dealer. Add the gun to your cart and choose a licensed Delaware dealer at checkout. If you’re buying a handgun, get your permit first.
- Off to your dealer. We keep your FFL’s license on file and ship the firearm to their address. Home delivery of firearms isn’t an option.
- Permit check and pickup. Show ID and your permit (for handguns), complete ATF Form 4473, and the dealer runs the background check before transfer.
What to know about firearm transfers in Delaware
Handgun permit to purchase. Since November 16, 2025, Delaware requires a handgun qualified purchaser permit, generally for buyers 21 and older who complete approved training. Permits are valid for two years. Permits are issued by the Delaware State Police State Bureau of Identification after training, fingerprinting and a background check. Holders of a valid Delaware concealed deadly weapon (CCDW) license don’t need a separate permit.
Assault weapon and magazine limits. Delaware bans the sale of firearms it defines as “assault weapons” and of magazines that hold more than 17 rounds. These laws are being challenged in court.
Gun laws differ by state and city and can change. You are responsible for following all federal, state and local laws, and your Delaware dealer can help with specifics. This overview isn’t legal advice. Some items we sell may not be legal to buy in Delaware; your dealer will not transfer an item that state law prohibits. Last reviewed: October 21, 2026.

Before you order in Delaware
Delaware’s handgun permit is issued by the State Bureau of Identification. Plan for the training requirement and processing time before you shop for a handgun, and keep your permit current, since it expires after two years. Rifles and shotguns don’t need the permit but still go through the dealer background check. Hunters in Kent and Sussex counties should check DNREC’s rules on which firearms can be used for deer before buying.
Delaware’s Coastal Plain draws waterfowl hunters to the marshes along the bay, while upstate buyers near Wilmington and Newark often shop for handguns and range gear. Whatever you’re buying, check that your dealer can transfer that model under Delaware law, and allow time for permit processing if it’s a pistol or revolver. Your dealer can also tell you how they handle magazine limits. Dover and Milford buyers, Lewes and Seaford buyers, and New Castle County buyers all have nearby dealer options, so pick one you can reach easily for the permit check and pickup. Sporting clays shooters and trap shooters will find over-under and semi-automatic shotguns in our shotgun department.
