Michigan: state law still references NFA registration

Michigan’s exception (MCL 750.224) depends on federal licensing or approval. Federally, a suppressor now transfers on a Form 4473 with a NICS check, with no Form 4 approval and no tax stamp (ATF policy since October 9, 2026). But because Michigan law points back to the NFA, we recommend Michigan buyers file the voluntary $0 Form 4 through JCM so the suppressor is registered. Ask us or your FFL before choosing the 4473-only option. Shop suppressors →

Michigan has a huge hunting community and plenty of suppressor owners, from the Thumb to the U.P. JCM Armory ships silencers to Michigan FFLs.

Are silencers legal in Michigan?

Yes, with a federal approval condition. MCL 750.224(1)(b) bans possessing a muffler or silencer, but §750.224(3)(c) exempts a person licensed by the federal government to possess one. Attorney General Opinion No. 7260 (2011) reads that to cover a person licensed or approved by ATF.

Can you hunt with a silencer in Michigan?

Michigan's current Wildlife Conservation Order, Chapter II (general hunting rules) does not list suppressors among prohibited devices. Check the DNR's current hunting digest for your season.

What Michigan buyers should know

Because Michigan's exception depends on federal licensing or approval, and Michigan hasn't addressed unregistered suppressors, Michigan buyers should file the voluntary $0 Form 4 through JCM to get an approved ATF form.

How buying a silencer from JCM Armory works

Since October 9, 2026, ATF does not enforce Form 4 approval or registration for suppressors. At JCM you pick one of two options (full details in our How to Buy a Silencer Online guide):

Our recommendation for Michigan: Option 2, the voluntary $0 Form 4, because Michigan law ties silencer ownership to federal registration or compliance.

Michigan silencer FAQ

Is a silencer legal in Michigan?

Yes when it's federally approved. MCL 750.224(3)(c) and AG Opinion 7260 allow possession by people licensed or approved by ATF. The voluntary $0 Form 4 gives you that approval.

What happens if I skip the Form 4 in Michigan?

Michigan's statute makes possession without federal licensing or approval a felony, so we don't recommend skipping it in Michigan.

How long does it take to get a silencer in Michigan?

With Option 1 you can usually pick up once it reaches your Michigan FFL and you pass the background check. With Option 2, ATF's Form 4 processing time applies.

Do you ship silencers directly to my house in Michigan?

No. Silencers ship to a licensed Michigan dealer, and you complete the paperwork there.
