How buying a gun online works in Massachusetts

  1. Pick your firearm and your dealer. Add the gun to your cart and choose a licensed Massachusetts dealer at checkout. Confirm the firearm is on the state’s approved list and that your FID or LTC covers it.
  2. Off to your dealer. We keep your FFL’s license on file and ship the firearm to their address. Home delivery of firearms isn’t an option.
  3. License check and pickup. Show your FID card or License to Carry and ID, complete ATF Form 4473, and the dealer records the sale in the state’s electronic system and runs the check.

What to know about firearm transfers in Massachusetts

FID or LTC required. Massachusetts residents need a Firearms Identification Card (FID) or License to Carry (LTC), issued by their local police chief, to buy firearms. Under the 2024 law, an FID covers non-large-capacity rifles and shotguns; an LTC is needed for handguns and large-capacity firearms.

Handgun roster. Dealers may only sell handguns that appear on the state’s approved firearms roster.

Chapter 135 of the Acts of 2024. This law, in effect since October 2, 2024, expanded the state’s ban on “assault-style firearms” and added a live firearms-safety training requirement for new FID and LTC applicants. It is Question 9 on the November 3, 2026 ballot: YES keeps it and NO repeals it. Until anything changes, we follow Chapter 135 as written, and Massachusetts’ longstanding 10-round magazine limit and dealer roster rules still apply either way. This law is on the ballot and may change; we follow the stricter rule until it’s settled. Ask us before ordering.

Gun laws differ by state and city and can change. You are responsible for following all federal, state and local laws, and your Massachusetts dealer can help with specifics. This overview isn’t legal advice. Some items we sell may not be legal to buy in Massachusetts; your dealer will not transfer an item that state law prohibits. Last reviewed: October 21, 2026.
