Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Aberdeen, Brookings, Watertown, Pierre or the Black Hills: South Dakota buyers can order from JCM Armory’s online catalog and pick up at a local dealer. We’re an FFL in Joppa, Maryland, and we can send your firearm to a licensed dealer in any state except California. Many South Dakotans plan their year around pheasant season, but Black Hills deer, prairie antelope and winter predator hunting keep rifles and optics popular too.
How buying a gun online works in South Dakota
- Pick your firearm and your dealer. Add the gun to your cart and choose a licensed South Dakota dealer at checkout. South Dakota dealers often get busy before pheasant season; call ahead.
- Your FFL receives it. Once we’ve verified your dealer’s license, we ship the gun to their store. We never send firearms to a customer’s home.
- Paperwork and pickup. At the counter you’ll show ID and fill out ATF Form 4473, and your South Dakota dealer runs the background check. When it comes back approved, the gun is yours.
What to know about firearm transfers in South Dakota
You must be 18 to buy a rifle or shotgun from a dealer, and 21 for a handgun, under federal law. South Dakota isn’t a point-of-contact state, so the FBI’s NICS handles every dealer background check.
There’s no state purchase permit and no gun registry in South Dakota.
This is general information, not legal advice. Following federal, state and local law is the buyer’s responsibility, and the rules can change. Your South Dakota dealer is a good first stop for questions. Last reviewed: October 2026.

Black Hills and prairie rifles
Hunters in the Black Hills often face timbered country and moderate shots, while West River prairie hunts can stretch much farther for antelope and mule deer. If you hunt both, consider a versatile mid-weight rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor, .270 or .308 with a 3-15x or similar scope.
Popular categories for South Dakota hunters
South Dakota seasons are set by South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP). Check the current hunting handbook before you hunt.
Getting ready for pheasant opener
Order your shotgun and shells early in the fall. Dealers and carriers get busy around the October pheasant opener. A 12- or 20-gauge with a modified choke and #5 or #6 shot covers most situations, and a blaze-orange vest and hat keep your group visible.
Before you order in South Dakota
South Dakota’s pheasant season brings hunters from all over, but this page is for residents buying through a local dealer. Pick one in Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Aberdeen, Brookings or wherever is convenient. Black Hills deer and elk hunters often choose a bolt-action rifle and variable scope. Prairie dog and varmint shooters in the west river country can find high-volume ammunition. Remember that ammunition and firearms ship in separate packages.
