How buying a gun online works in South Carolina

  1. Pick your firearm and your dealer. Add the gun to your cart and choose a licensed South Carolina dealer at checkout. Ask your South Carolina dealer about their transfer fee and hours before checkout.
  2. Shipped to the shop you picked. We confirm your dealer’s license, then ship the firearm to them. Guns don’t ship to home addresses.
  3. NICS check and pickup. Show ID and complete ATF Form 4473; your South Carolina dealer runs the FBI NICS check. Once you’re approved, inspect the firearm and take it home.

What to know about firearm transfers in South Carolina

Federal dealer age limits apply: at least 21 for a handgun and at least 18 for a rifle or shotgun. South Carolina is not a “point of contact” state, so dealers run background checks directly through the FBI’s NICS system.

South Carolina has no permit-to-purchase or registration. The state’s old one-handgun-per-30-days limit was repealed by Act 242 of 2004. Since March 7, 2024, eligible adults may carry a handgun without a permit; the concealed weapons permit (CWP) is still issued.

Military buyers. Federal law treats active-duty service members as residents of the state of their permanent duty station, so soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines stationed in South Carolina, including at Fort Jackson, can buy from a South Carolina dealer with their orders.

Laws can change, and buyers are responsible for complying with federal, state and local law. Your local South Carolina dealer is the best resource for questions about a specific firearm. This is general information, not legal advice. Last reviewed: October 2026.

Home-defense shotgun basics

A pump-action 12- or 20-gauge remains one of the most popular home-defense choices in South Carolina. It’s simple, reliable and versatile, and the same gun can go to the dove field in September. Look for an 18 to 20 inch barrel, good sights or a bead, and a stock that fits your length of pull. Buckshot loads vary widely in recoil and spread, so pattern a few at the range before settling on one.
