How buying a gun online works in Missouri

  1. Pick your firearm and your dealer. Add the gun to your cart and choose a licensed Missouri dealer at checkout. Missouri dealers from small-town shops to large outdoor retailers accept transfers; call first for their fee.
  2. We ship to your FFL. Once your dealer’s license is on file, we ship the firearm directly to them. Firearms are never shipped to a home address.
  3. NICS check and pickup. Show ID, complete ATF Form 4473, and your dealer runs the FBI NICS check. A valid Missouri concealed carry permit may also qualify under ATF rules. Once approved, the gun is yours.

What to know about firearm transfers in Missouri

Federal dealer age limits apply: at least 21 for a handgun and at least 18 for a rifle or shotgun. Missouri is not a “point of contact” state, so dealers run background checks directly through the FBI’s NICS system.

Missouri repealed its permit-to-acquire requirement for handguns in 2007 and has no state firearm registration. State law (RSMo 21.750) reserves most firearm regulation to the state.

Military buyers. Under federal law, active-duty service members are residents of the state of their permanent duty station. Soldiers stationed at Fort Leonard Wood or airmen at Whiteman Air Force Base can buy from a Missouri dealer with their orders. Missouri also allows permitless concealed carry for eligible adults, and the state concealed carry permit is still available for those who want reciprocity in other states.

Kansas City and St. Louis metro buyers. Both metros cross state lines. Federal law requires a handgun to be transferred by a dealer in the buyer’s state of residence, so if you live on the Kansas side of Kansas City or the Illinois side of the St. Louis area, choose a dealer in your own state instead of a Missouri shop. Missouri residents should choose a Missouri dealer.

Buyers are responsible for knowing and following federal, state and local law. Laws change, so confirm anything specific with your Missouri dealer. This page is general information, not legal advice. Last reviewed: October 2026.
